In a move aimed at bolstering the country’s educational sector, President Bola Tinubu has approved new appointments to the leadership and governing councils of two recently upgraded federal universities. The appointments, confirmed in a statement on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, include key roles at the Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education in Kano and the Federal University of Education in Zaria.
For the Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, President Tinubu has named Engineer Abdurrazaq Abubakar Nakore as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council. Nakore, a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, previously served as the Executive Secretary of the Rural Electricity Board in Jigawa State. In addition, Professor Abdullahi Tukur Kodage has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor for the university.
Similarly, Professor Yahaya Isa Bunkure was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Education in Zaria, Kaduna State. Professor Bunkure is a respected academic specializing in science education and currently holds the position of Vice-Chancellor at Saadatu Rimi University of Education in Kano.
The Federal University of Education, Zaria, and the Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano, were among four Colleges of Education that were elevated to full-fledged universities between 2022 and 2023. According to the institutions’ governing laws, the new Pro-Chancellor will serve a four-year term, while the Vice-Chancellors will serve for five years.
Salihu Dembos Reinstated as NTA Director-General
In a separate development, the staff of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) expressed their delight on Wednesday as they welcomed back their Director-General, Salihu Abdulhamid Dembos. A video shared on social media platform 𝕏 showed the jubilant staff singing in celebration of his return.
Dembos’s reinstatement follows a directive from President Tinubu on September 2, which effectively reversed earlier management changes at the national station. The recall comes after the President had previously removed the NTA’s management team in August and approved a new Director-General. Dembos will now complete his three-year tenure, which was briefly interrupted by the changes.
