Real Madrid defender Antonio Rdiger is facing an extended period on the sidelines, with the club confirming he has undergone surgery to address a tear in the outer meniscus of his left knee. The procedure, performed by Dr Manuel Leyes under the supervision of Real Madrid’s medical team, is expected to keep the German international out of action for approximately two months as he begins his rehabilitation.

The news of Rdiger’s injury coincides with a heated debate surrounding his conduct following Real Madrid’s Copa del Rey final defeat to Barcelona. Television footage captured the defender’s apparent frustration, showing him throwing an ice pack in the direction of the referee after the final whistle. His visibly upset demeanor sparked concerns about potential disciplinary action.

German football legends Lothar Matthus and Dietmar Hamann publicly condemned Rdiger’s behaviour. Matthus called for a significant ban, while Hamann urged the German Football Association (DFB) to take stringent action against the Real Madrid star.

However, a recent report from Frankfurter Allgemeine, as cited by MARCA, suggests that the DFB will not be imposing a suspension on Rdiger. The report indicates that the DFB took into account Rdiger’s immediate response to the incident. The defender issued a public apology the morning after the final, expressing his regret and explicitly apologizing to the referee for his actions.

Furthermore, Rdiger proactively contacted Germany’s sporting director, Rudi Vller, and head coach, Julian Nagelsmann, to personally apologize and discuss the implications of his behaviour. This proactive approach, coupled with his well-regarded reputation for community service through his childrens foundations, reportedly played a crucial role in the DFB’s decision to refrain from a suspension.

Despite avoiding a ban, the DFB did issue a formal reprimand to Rdiger, reminding him of his responsibilities as a professional footballer and the paramount importance of upholding sportsmanship on the field.

While Rdiger escapes disciplinary action from his national federation, Real Madrid will now have to navigate the next two months without a key player in their defense as he recovers from his knee surgery. His absence will undoubtedly be a setback for the club as they continue their campaign.
