The procedure, performed by Dr Manuel Leyes under the supervision of Real Madrid’s medical team, is expected to keep the German international out of action for approximately two months as he begins his rehabilitation.
The news of Rüdiger’s injury coincides with a heated debate surrounding his conduct following Real Madrid’s Copa del Rey final defeat to Barcelona. Television footage captured the defender’s apparent frustration, showing him throwing an ice pack in the direction of the referee after the final whistle. His visibly upset demeanor sparked concerns about potential disciplinary action.
German football legends Lothar Matthäus and Dietmar Hamann publicly condemned Rüdiger’s behaviour. Matthäus called for a significant ban, while Hamann urged the German Football Association (DFB) to take stringent action against the Real Madrid star.
However, a recent report from Frankfurter Allgemeine, as cited by MARCA, suggests that the DFB will not be imposing a suspension on Rüdiger. The report indicates that the DFB took into account Rüdiger’s immediate response to the incident. The defender issued a public apology the morning after the final, expressing his regret and explicitly apologizing to the referee for his actions.
Furthermore, Rüdiger proactively contacted Germany’s sporting director, Rudi Völler, and head coach, Julian Nagelsmann, to personally apologize and discuss the implications of his behaviour.
