Sheffield United seized the top spot in the Championship on Friday, delivering a blow to Coventry’s playoff aspirations with a dominant 3-1 victory.

The Blades entered the match trailing previous leaders Leeds only on goal difference, but their performance propelled them closer to an immediate Premier League return.

Gustavo Hamer opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a stunning free-kick against his former club. Hamer held up his hands in apology to the away fans after the goal. Tyrese Campbell then doubled the home side’s advantage before halftime, converting Femi Seriki’s cross for his 10th goal of the season. Rhian Brewster extended the lead further with a powerful strike, marking his first goal at Bramall Lane since 2022. Jack Rudoni scored a consolation goal for Coventry in stoppage time.

With this result, Sheffield United now lead the Championship, and have opened a five-point gap over third-placed Burnley in the race for automatic promotion
