Sporting CP weathered an early storm and a resilient FC Kairat before ultimately securing a 4-1 victory in their UEFA Champions League opener at the Estadio Jose Alvalade. The Kazakhstani newcomers, playing in their first-ever Champions League group stage match, showed remarkable fight for over an hour, due in large part to the heroics of their teenage goalkeeper.

Seventeen-year-old goalkeeper Sherkhan Kalmurza, a late inclusion due to an injury crisis, was a standout performer for Kairat. He made a series of impressive saves, including a crucial penalty stop against Sporting’s Morten Hjulmand, to keep his side in the game for much of the first half.

Despite Kalmurza’s efforts and a close long-range strike from Chelsea-bound teenager Dastan Satpayev, Sporting’s pressure eventually paid off. Francisco Trincao finally broke the deadlock just before halftime with a curled shot into the top corner.

The second half began with the same frantic energy as the first, with both teams creating chances. However, with about 25 minutes remaining, Sporting finally broke Kairat’s resolve. A three-minute goal blitz sealed the victory for the home side.

Trincao bagged his second with another well-placed shot. A minute later, substitute Alisson Santos scored his first goal for the club, set up by a driving run from Geovany Quenda. Quenda then completed the blitz with a solo effort, weaving through three defenders before calmly slotting home to make it 4-0.

Although the result was decided, the night ended on a high note for the debutants. Substitute Edmilson rocketed in a powerful shot with just four minutes remaining, securing a historic moment for FC Kairat with their first-ever goal in the Champions League league phase.
