The world’s only known pink manta ray, a rare reef manta ray (Mobula alfredi), has been affectionately nicknamed Inspector Clouseau after the
“Pink Panther” character. First observed in 2015 near Lady Elliot Island in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, this striking male measures approximately 3.3 meters (11 feet) across! His unusual pink coloration is the result of a rare genetic mutation known as erythrism, which alters pigmentation and is exceptionally uncommon in marine life.
Although initial theories suggested the pink hue might stem from diet, illness, or environmental influences, researchers have since confirmed that none of these factors are responsible. Inspector Clouseau is in good health and exhibits normal behavior when interacting with other manta rays.
