Nigeria entered the match needing a clear victory following a mixed start to their group campaign. Egypt produced early threat when Farah El Mahdy tested goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, but the 10-time champions soon seized control of proceedings.
The opening goal arrived in the 15th minute after a VAR review confirmed a handball by Egypt’s Nour Abdelwahed inside the penalty box. Asisat Oshoala stepped up and converted from the spot to give Nigeria the lead.
Oshoala was later forced off due to an injury setback, making way for Washington Spirit forward Gift Monday. The substitute made an instant impression, doubling Nigeria’s advantage just before half-time off a low cross from Rinsola Babajide. Egypt pulled one back deep into first-half stoppage time when Nadine Ghazi dispatched a penalty following a foul by Michelle Alozie.
The Super Falcons kept their foot on the gas after the restart. Substitute Uchenna Kanu restored the two-goal cushion in the 57th minute after capitalizing on defensive indecision in the Egyptian box. Christy Ucheibe made it 4-1 from the penalty spot in the 81st minute after Kanu was brought down.
Although Ghazi added a second goal for Egypt with a long-range strike to bring the score to 4-2, Nigeria put the match completely out of reach in closing minutes. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade converted Nigeria’s third penalty of the night in stoppage time before setting up Joy Omewa to round out the 6-2 victory.
The result sets up a quarter-final clash against Cameroon, as the Super Falcons continue their quest for a record-extending 11th WAFCON title.
