President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to building a well-trained and well-equipped Nigeria Police Force. The President made this declaration on Monday during the inaugural celebration of National Police Day at Eagles Square in Abuja.
The event, which marked the beginning of the 2025 Police Week, saw President Tinubu formally announce the institutionalization of April 7th as an annual National Police Day. This day will serve as a tribute to the fallen heroes of the force and a recognition of the heroic contributions of its personnel.
Represented at the event by Vice President Kashim Shettima, President Tinubu stated, As President, I reaffirm this administrations steadfast dedication to the welfare and empowerment of the Nigeria Police Force. A secure Nigeria is vital for our collective prosperity, and this vision begins with ensuring that our police force is well-equipped, well-trained, and well-motivated. We are resolute in our commitment to police welfare and comprehensive reform. To that end, let me assure you that the Federal Government of Nigeria will institutionalise 7th April as an annual celebration of National Police Day, cementing its place in our national calendar and demonstrating our enduring appreciation for the Nigeria Police Force.
President Tinubu outlined concrete measures his administration is actively implementing to immediately foster an effective and formidable police force. These include significant improvements to the conditions under which police officers serve, with a focus on providing adequate housing, accessible healthcare, and quality education for their children. The President assured that the materialization of these promises would commence immediately.
Furthermore, President Tinubu emphasized his administration’s determination to equip the police with modern tools and technology to enhance their capabilities in combating crime. He also pledged to ensure that the salaries and benefits of police officers reflect the critical nature of their responsibilities and the daily risks they face, stating that anything less would be unacceptable.
Describing the Nigeria Police Force as a cornerstone of the nations security and the first line of defense against criminal activities, the President affirmed their crucial role as protectors of Nigerias democracy and custodians of the safety of its citizens.
Your role is indispensable, and your contributions are immeasurable. Why have we established National Police Day? The answer is straightforward. This day serves to highlight your invaluable service and to honour the officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. To their families, we extend our deepest condolences and our unwavering commitment to preserving their legacy. Let it be clear: 7th April is not merely a date on the calendar. It is a symbol of our enduring partnership and respect for the Nigeria Police Forcea day firmly entrenched in our national consciousness, President Tinubu added.
The President commended the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, and his team for their dedicated efforts in advancing reforms aligned with the administrations objectives.
Earlier in his address, IGP Kayode Egbetokun stated that National Police Day provides a valuable opportunity to remember the sacrifices of fallen officers and acknowledge the bravery and heroism of the men and women of the Police Force in their operations across the country and beyond. He added that the day also serves as a platform to reiterate the renewed commitment to excellence, professionalism, and respect for human rights, embodying the core values of the reformed police force.
