The Nigeria National League (NNL) has implemented a significant change to its promotion system, abolishing the Super 8 playoffs in favor of a new, simplified format. Starting from the 2025/26 season, only the winners of the four conference groups will earn a direct ticket to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
This decision, announced following the NNL Annual General Assembly on Tuesday, marks a major shift from the previous system where promotion was determined through a high-stakes, end-of-season tournament. The new format is designed to reward consistency throughout the season.
According to a statement from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the upcoming season will kick off with a single star match on Saturday, November 8. The rest of the first-round fixtures are slated to take place a week later, between November 14 and 16, at various venues across the country.
The league will now operate with an abridged structure consisting of four conferences: A, B, C, and D. The top club from each of these conferences at the end of the regular season will secure automatic promotion to the NPFL.
While the playoffs are gone, the four promoted clubs will still compete in a mandatory Super Four tournament to determine the overall NNL champion. The federation has made it clear that participation in this tournament is compulsory, and any promoted club that fails to show up will automatically forfeit its promotion slot to the second-placed team in its conference.
This new structure is expected to bring more clarity and competition to the NNL, ensuring that the top-performing teams are rewarded directly for their efforts throughout the campaign.
