President Bola Tinubu on Thursday expressed profound satisfaction and commended the Senate for the rapid confirmation of General Christopher Musa (rtd) as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence.
In a statement personally signed and released via his official X account, President Tinubu praised the upper legislative chamber for concluding the screening and confirmation process in less than 48 hours after his name was forwarded to the National Assembly.
“Two days ago, I transmitted the name of General Christopher G. Musa, our immediate past Chief of Defence Staff and a fine gentleman, to the Nigerian Senate for confirmation as the Federal Minister of Defence. I want to commend the Nigerian Senate for its expedited confirmation of General Musa yesterday,” the President wrote.
Tinubu emphasized the critical timing of the appointment, noting that General Musa is taking the helm of the Ministry of Defence at a “critical juncture” for the nation’s security architecture.
General Musa, the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, was confirmed by the Senate on Wednesday following an extensive five-hour grilling session by lawmakers. He is replacing Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, who resigned from the position citing health grounds.
During his rigorous screening, General Musa promised the Senators that his tenure would be characterized by a zero-tolerance policy against banditry, terrorism, and other security threats. He assured the chamber that he would deploy firm and decisive strategies to confront the country’s myriad security challenges immediately upon assuming office. The confirmation signals the President’s resolve to consolidate his administration’s efforts to tackle insecurity nationwide.
