In a poignant and emotionally charged start to the new Premier League season, Liverpool paid a heartfelt tribute to forward Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, who both tragically passed away in a car crash last month. The atmosphere at Anfield was heavy with grief and love as players and fans united to remember a beloved teammate.

Before the season opener against Bournemouth, a minute’s silence was observed, during which an emotional Mohamed Salah buried his face in his hands. Players stood arm-in-arm with heads bowed, while fans in the stands shed tears, and the words “Rest in peace Diogo Jota and Andre Silva, you’ll never walk alone,” were displayed around the pitch. The tribute continued into the match, with Jota scarves and banners visible throughout the crowd. Fans in two stands held placards that spelled out “DJ 20” and “AS 30” in the red, green, and white colours of the Portuguese flag.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot shared his thoughts on the squad’s resilience. “The squad is far better than I expected five or six weeks ago,” he told Sky Sports, acknowledging the immense difficulty of the past month. “They have conducted themselves so, so well… as human beings but also they understood that they needed to be professional footballers again.”

The club has announced several permanent tributes to honor Jota’s memory. The team will wear a “Forever 20” emblem on their shirts throughout the season, and his No. 20 shirt has been retired across all levels of the club.

In the 20th minute of the game, a powerful wave of emotion swept through the stadium as the Anfield crowd rose to their feet, cheering and singing their song for Jota, set to the tune of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Bad Moon Rising,” in a final, resounding farewell.
