A disastrous first-half performance proved costly for Girona as they fell to a 3-1 defeat against Rayo Vallecano on the opening day of the LaLiga season. The result marked Rayo’s first-ever away victory against Girona in the league.
Hoping to put their last campaign behind them, Girona’s new season started in the worst possible way. Despite the insurmountable deficit and numerical disadvantage, Girona showed determination in the second half. Joel Roca scored his first LaLiga goal with a solid strike following good work from Viktor Tsygankov, providing a moment of cheer for the home side. While Girona continued to fight and created some chances, Rayo Vallecano’s man advantage ensured they never truly looked in danger of surrendering their lead.
A late effort from Pathé Ciss was ruled out for offside, but it did little to dampen the celebrations for Rayo, who clinched a vital opening-day win.
