The African Union (AU) announced on Wednesday that it has lifted sanctions imposed on Gabon.

Gabon was initially suspended from the organization following a coup in August 2023, during which Brice Oligui Nguema led the overthrow of President Ali Bongo, whose family had been in power for 55 years.

Brice Oligui Nguema pledged to return the oil-rich nation to civilian rule after a two-year transitional period. He was elected President earlier this month, securing more than 94 percent of the vote.

The AU’s Political Affairs, Peace and Security Department stated on X that the Peace and Security Council had reviewed Gabon’s political transition and deemed the processes to be generally successful.

In its statement, the AU confirmed that Gabon is now welcome to immediately resume its participation in the Union’s activities.

Gabonese President Brice Oligui Nguema expressed his satisfaction on Facebook, describing a “deep sense of pride.†He stated, “This return is much more than a symbol: it is recognition of our collective commitment to rebuilding our country in peace, order, and dignity.â€

The AU’s decision to lift sanctions follows a meeting last year between Nguema and Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara, where the Gabonese leader sought support for the removal of the sanctions.

Gabon, a nation of 2.3 million people, has faced challenges including high unemployment, frequent power and water shortages, and significant government debt, despite its substantial oil wealth.
