Fave Slams Music Industry Double Standards, Says Female Artists Face More Scrutiny Than Men
Nigerian singer GodsFavour Chidozie, popularly known as Fave, has called out gender double standards in the music industry, arguing that female performers are frequently judged by their physical appearance and wardrobe choices rather than their artistic talent.
Speaking during a recent guest appearance on the Afropolitan Podcast, the ‘Baby Riddim’ hitmaker highlighted the stark contrast in expectations placed on female musicians compared to their male counterparts. She noted that breaking into the industry is significantly harder for women because public commentary often prioritizes superficial attributes over musical ability.
“It’s harder for female artists to blow. Female artists aren’t measured by talent but by what they wear. If your tummy isn’t flat, you know, if your skin is… because now there’s this new saga, people think I bleached.”
Fave expressed frustration over how public discussions around female artists frequently reduce their work to sexualized standards or internet rumors. She emphasized that public focus often shifts toward personal fashion choices or physical traits rather than the underlying music.
“It’s more about people’s sexual desires or their fantasies about you. And I think that right there is a problem, because then it’s more about how decently you are dressed before I get to listen to you.”
The singer argued that these double standards afford male artists far more leeway to succeed with average efforts, whereas female performers are required to deliver exceptional stagecraft and output just to maintain visibility. Fave recalled encountering label executives early in her career who were hesitant to sign female talent due to perceptions that women are harder to manage.
Despite the structural challenges, Fave reaffirmed her commitment to supporting other women building careers in African music while continuing to grow her own brand, noting that her core focus remains getting audiences to value her musical offerings above public commentary.
