Bruno Fernandes Hat-Trick Powers Manchester United to 5-2 Comeback Win Over Ipswich Town
Manchester United recovered from a goal down to defeat Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford, registering their first Premier League victory of the season. Bruno Fernandes led the response with his first league hat-trick since August 2021, helping end a three-game winless streak against newly promoted sides under manager Michael Carrick.
Seeking to move past an opening-day defeat, United were tested early by Gary O’Neil’s side. Senne Lammens kept out an early effort from Daizen Maeda before Leif Davis opened the scoring for Ipswich, converting at the back post following a delivery from Abdul Fatawu. Lammens made another key save shortly after to prevent Davis from extending the visitors’ lead.
United capitalized on an Ipswich error to equalize before the interval. Marcelino Nunez lost his footing, allowing Matheus Cunha to set up Fernandes, who fired past Kjell Scherpen at the near post.
The home side took control early in the second half. Following a missed opportunity from Bryan Mbeumo, Harry Maguire charged down a clearance on the edge of the penalty box, with his resulting shot deflecting off Jacob Greaves into the net to give United the lead.
Momentum remained with Carrick’s side as Greaves tripped Cunha inside the area shortly after, allowing Fernandes to step up and convert from the penalty spot. Fernandes completed his hat-trick with a close-range finish after initial attempts from Kobbie Mainoo and Mbeumo were blocked.
Fernandes then turned provider, playing in Mbeumo to chip over Scherpen for United’s fifth goal. Ipswich added a late consolation deep into stoppage time when Julio Enciso set up Chuba Akpom for a tap-in, but the result was already sealed, marking Manchester United’s ninth win in 10 matches at Old Trafford since Carrick took charge.
