Chelsea produced a dramatic second-half comeback to overcome a two-goal deficit and defeat Leeds United 6-3 at Stamford Bridge, securing their place in the League Cup fourth round.
Xabi Alonso’s side appeared to be heading for an early exit after Tarik Muharemovic powered home a header from Harry Wilson’s 23rd-minute corner to put Leeds ahead. The visitors doubled their advantage shortly after the interval when Brenden Aaronson finished off a flick from Lukas Nmecha.
Alonso responded by introducing Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Pedro Neto, and Reece James at halftime. The quadruple substitution completely altered the momentum. Palmer got Chelsea back into the game from the penalty spot in the 53rd minute following a foul on Pep Chavarria, before leveling the score just two minutes later with a low strike. Neto completed the quickfire turnaround in the 60th minute with a curling 20-yard effort, and Danny Welbeck added a fourth just two minutes after.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin pulled one back for Leeds in the 75th minute with a clinical finish, but Valentin Barco restored Chelsea’s two-goal cushion by sweeping into an empty net after an error from debutant goalkeeper Michael Zetterer. Welbeck capped off the scoring in stoppage time by cushioning Barco’s shot into the net to lock in the victory.
