Cole Palmer Set to Withdraw from England Squad as Thomas Tuchel Faces Selection Headaches
Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer is set to withdraw from Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures, dealing an early blow to the German manager’s plans during the season’s first international break.
Palmer had earned a recall to the 27-man Three Lions squad after being left out of the recent World Cup roster. However, according to reports from The Athletic’s David Ornstein, the 24-year-old playmaker is pulling out due to load management concerns following a heavy workload for his club.
Palmer has made seven appearances across all competitions for Chelsea this season, recording four goals and two assists despite the Blues navigating a turbulent start to their campaign.
Tuchel’s Selection Decisions and Opportunity Missed
Tuchel made eight changes to his squad compared to the previous World Cup campaign as England prepare for an extended Nations League schedule featuring matches against Spain, Croatia, and a home-and-away double-header with Czechia.
Speaking ahead of the camp, Tuchel highlighted that both Palmer and Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold had earned their places back through consistent club performances:
“They had a good start to the season,” Tuchel said. “They never did something wrong. We just chose different players. So now it is a new competition… Cole has his starts that he always had but he has his numbers back—he has his assists back, he has decisive goals back—so that is why he is in the squad.“I think he has a point to prove, and the same goes for Trent. He was never off the list. He was never non-selectable for us, and it is his chance to show, come to camp and be the best version of himself.”
Palmer’s expected withdrawal deprives the midfielder of an immediate chance to stake a permanent claim in Tuchel’s tactical setup.
Squad Uncertainties Ahead of Nations League Opener
Palmer is not the only fitness concern facing the England camp. Doubts also surround Manchester United duo Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo, complicating Tuchel’s preparations as he aims to establish momentum in his first Nations League campaign in charge.
