After a remarkable career that spanned 24 years, Onome Ebi, one of Africa’s most decorated and enduring footballers, has officially announced her retirement from professional football. The legendary Nigerian defender, celebrated for her resilience and leadership, shared the emotional news in a statement on her social media pages on Wednesday, September 17.

Ebi’s legacy is defined by a series of monumental achievements, starting with her historic record of being the first African footballer, male or female, to participate in six FIFA World Cup tournaments. From her debut in 2003 all the way to her final appearance in 2023, she was a constant presence on the world stage. Her contributions to the Super Falcons were immense, earning her over 100 international caps and four Women’s Africa Cup of Nations titles, solidifying Nigeria’s dominance on the continent.

Her club career was a global tapestry, with stints at clubs across Europe, Asia, and Africa. She graced the pitches of Swedish clubs Piteå and Djurgården, won titles with Turkish champions Ataşehir Belediyespor and Belarusian giants FC Minsk, and also played for Henan Jianye in China. Her career came full circle with her final chapter at Naija Ratels in Nigeria, a move she made to support the youthful profile of the club. Her dedication earned her individual honours, including a place in the IFFHS CAF Women’s Team of the Decade.

As she hangs up her boots, Ebi’s journey in football is far from over.
