Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has reiterated his qualification for the Nigerian presidency, while emphasizing that his current focus remains on addressing the pressing challenges facing the nation.
In recent statements, Governor Makinde clarified that he will determine his own political agenda, rejecting any attempts by others to dictate his path. He stated that while his initial political aspiration was to serve as a senator, he has found himself fulfilling the role of a governor.
Governor Makinde stressed that the immediate concern for all political leaders should be the welfare of Nigerians, particularly the alleviation of hunger and hardship, rather than focusing on the 2027 elections.
“We have to look at Nigerians first of all and ask what they are going through. Are they happy? Are we just playing politics? Have we reduced hunger in the land? Are people angry? What exactly should we be looking at? Those issues must be at the front burner in arriving at any decision,” Governor Makinde stated.
He further emphasized that governance should benefit the entire nation, not just a select few. “The end is to ask if were able to make the lives of our people better and not just a section of the country,” he said.
Regarding his presidential ambitions, Governor Makinde asserted his capability to hold the highest office in the land, but that for the time being his concentration is on governing Oyo state, and fixing issues within his party. He also said, that if his political carrier ended at his current position, he would be happy.
“I have the capacity to occupy the highest office in this land. But, where we are is to fix our party. Id my political journey ends right here, I am happy. When I joined politics in 2007, I wanted to go to the senate. But, now Ive achieved more than that. And I cherish the opportunity the people gave to me to make my difference,” he said.
Governor Makinde’s statements highlight the ongoing political discourse surrounding the 2027 presidential elections, while also underscoring the immediate need to address the socioeconomic challenges facing Nigeria.
