The 31st South African Music Awards (SAMA 31) has announced the nominees for its prestigious “Rest of Africa Award,” a category designed to honor outstanding musical talent from across the continent. This year’s list showcases a powerful lineup of Afropop sensations who have made a significant impact beyond their home countries.

The 2025 nominees for the coveted award are:

Ayra Starr for The Year I Turned 21

Bensoul for The Party & After Party

Wizkid for Morayo

Tems for Born in the Wild

Fireboy DML for Adedamola

The “Rest of Africa Award” is a key feature of the SAMAs, reinforcing the event’s commitment to celebrating pan-African unity and creativity. The award acknowledges how music transcends borders, connecting diverse cultures through a shared African sound.

Last year’s winner was Zimbabwean artist Edgar Muzah, who was recognized for his album, Son of a Tribe (Royalty Edition). The project, which blends traditional African rhythms with global influences, highlighted the SAMAs’ mission to showcase talent from all over Africa.

SAMA spokesperson Unati Gwija reflected on the category’s growing importance, stating, “Edgar’s award was more than just a recognition; it demonstrated the vibrant and innovative music that exists across the continent. The increasing interest in this category suggests that we might see even more remarkable talent emerging in the future.”

As the ceremony approaches, global audiences can look forward to a vibrant celebration of African artistry. This award not only adds prestige to the event but also amplifies cross-border creativity, further establishing South Africa’s pivotal role in the continent’s music scene.
