Organised labour in Taraba State, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), has announced the start of an indefinite strike beginning today. The unions stated they will not be intimidated by threats from state government representatives to stop the action.
NLC leader Peter Jediel and TUC leader Sule Abasu confirmed the decision during a press briefing, explaining that the strike is a direct response to alleged irregularities in the state’s biometric data capture committee exercise. They claim the exercise has unfairly excluded some workers, labeling them as “ghost workers.â€
The unions accused the committee of engaging in illegal practices and expressed frustration with the government’s failure to address their earlier ultimatum. The union leaders emphasized that the strike was declared for the welfare of their workers.
