In a match already being hailed as an all-time classic, Paris Saint-Germain secured a slender advantage in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final, defeating Bayern Munich 5-4 at a pulsating Parc des Princes. The nine-goal explosion set a new record for the highest-scoring semi-final leg in the competition’s history, surpassing the legendary 2010 clash between Barcelona and Inter Milan for sheer entertainment value.

The contest lived up to its heavyweight billing from the opening whistle. Harry Kane silenced the Parisian crowd in the 17th minute, converting a clinical penalty after Willian Pacho fouled Luis Diaz. The goal marked Kane’s 13th in the competition this season, reinforcing Bayern’s status as a formidable road side under Vincent Kompany.

However, the hosts responded with a breathtaking offensive surge. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia leveled the score in the 24th minute with an exquisite curling effort, before Joao Neves headed home from an Ousmane Dembele corner to turn the tide. Despite Bayern’s Michael Olise rifling home a stunning equalizer to make it 2-2, PSG reclaimed the lead just before the break through a hotly disputed Dembele penalty following an Alphonso Davies handball.

The second half saw no dip in intensity. Kvaratskhelia doubled his tally before the hour mark, assisted by a marauding Achraf Hakimi, and Dembele appeared to put the tie out of reach just minutes later with PSG’s fifth goal.

Refusing to fold, the Bavarians mounted a late comeback. Dayot Upamecano pulled one back with a powerful header before Luis Diaz drilled home Bayern’s fourth, marking the 100th goal scored by the visitors’ front three this season. While Bayern dominated possession in the closing stages, the French giants held firm to protect their lead.

“This was a reminder of why we love this game,” said PSG manager Luis Enrique. “It was chaotic, brilliant, and exhausting. We have the lead, but we know the job is only half done.”

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany echoed the sentiment, promising another attacking masterclass in the return leg. “We showed incredible character to fight back. We are still very much in this tie heading back to Munich.”

With both sides displaying world-class attacking intent and a total of nine goals scored, the footballing world now turns its attention to the second leg, where a spot in the Champions League final awaits.
