Nigeria began their quest for an eighth TotalEnergies CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations title with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Tunisia in their Group B opener at the 30 June Air Defence Stadium in Cairo on Thursday.

Auwal Ibrahim’s first-half goal proved to be the difference between the two sides in a match characterized by intense physicality, numerous close calls, and late drama.

Nigeria dominated the early stages, creating several scoring opportunities, but Tunisia’s defense proved resilient. However, in the 38th minute, Odinaka Okoro delivered a precise pass to Ibrahim, who converted from close range to give Nigeria the lead.

Tunisia responded with urgency, nearly equalizing through Omar Ben Ali and Anis Doubal, but the Nigerian goalkeeper and defenders held firm. Tunisia’s closest chance came in the 87th minute, but Doubal’s shot was saved.

Nigeria’s midfield, led by Divine Oliseh and Clinton Jephta, played a key role in controlling much of the match, although the second half became increasingly fragmented and filled with fouls. The game’s intensity was reflected in the six yellow cards, which were evenly distributed between the two teams.

Tunisia, who reached the semi-finals in both 2021 and 2023, applied significant pressure in the final minutes, launching a series of corners and long-range shots, but Nigeria’s defensive line, marshalled by Daniel Bameyi and Adamu Maigari, remained resolute.

The victory earns Nigeria three crucial points in a group that also includes Morocco and Kenya, while Tunisia now faces increased pressure in their upcoming matches.

Nigeria, the most successful team in U-20 AFCON history with seven titles, has now extended their unbeaten run in tournament openers to eight of their last ten appearances.
