Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has undergone surgery for an abdominal injury sustained during the club’s 2-2 Premier League draw with Leicester City on Sunday. The club confirmed the news in a statement released on Monday.

The Nigerian international collided with the post during the match and, despite receiving on-field treatment, rejoined the game but appeared to be visibly limping for the final ten minutes.

“Everyone at Nottingham Forest sends their best wishes to Taiwo,” the club stated in a message posted on X, expressing their support for the injured forward.

The incident has sparked some frustration within the club, with Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis reportedly expressing his disappointment that Awoniyi was not substituted after the injury. Manager Nuno Espirito Santo attributed the decision to a misunderstanding between the coaching and medical departments.

Awoniyi’s absence will be a significant blow for Nottingham Forest as they continue their push for a strong finish to the Premier League season. The team currently sits just one point behind fifth-placed Chelsea and are scheduled to visit West Ham United on Sunday. The timeline for Awoniyi’s recovery is yet to be confirmed.
