The 2025/26 Premier League season kicked off with a familiar story for Chelsea as they were held to a goalless draw by a resilient Crystal Palace side at Stamford Bridge. The stalemate extends Chelsea’s dominant head-to-head record against the Eagles, a streak that now stands at 17 games without defeat.

After a summer filled with silverware for both clubs, an optimistic atmosphere filled Stamford Bridge. The match began with a fast tempo, as both sides looked to assert themselves early. Palace, fresh from their FA Cup and Community Shield victories, showed they were a tough opponent and nearly found the back of the net in the 13th minute.

Eberechi Eze believed he had given the visitors a dream start with a powerful free-kick that flew past Robert Sanchez. However, a VAR review determined that Palace captain Marc Guehi was too close to the Chelsea wall at the time of the strike. Referee Darren England used his on-field microphone to explain the decision, disallowing the goal.

The pace of the game slowed as the first half went on, with Trevoh Chalobah’s wild shot from close range being the most significant chance for the Blues before the break.

In the second half, the introduction of debutant Estevao just before the hour mark injected some much-needed energy into Chelsea’s attack. The young Brazilian immediately looked to create opportunities, but the home side continued to struggle to carve out clear-cut chances against a well-organized Palace defence.

Late in the game, substitutes Liam Delap and Andrey Santos both threatened to break the deadlock but were unable to beat Palace’s goalkeeper, Dean Henderson. Chelsea, the reigning FIFA Club World Cup champions, were ultimately frustrated by the Eagles’ resolute rearguard and had to settle for a single point to begin their domestic campaign.

For Crystal Palace, avoiding defeat for the fourth time in five season-opening Premier League matches will be a source of satisfaction for their fans, who now look ahead to a UEFA Conference League play-off tie.
