Turkish football club Fenerbahce has announced Domenico Tedesco as its new head coach, replacing Jose Mourinho on a two-year contract. The 39-year-old Italian-German manager’s appointment was confirmed by the club on Tuesday.

Tedesco’s new role at the Istanbul club comes after he was sacked as Belgium’s national team coach last January. His career also includes stints at clubs like Schalke, Spartak Moscow, and RB Leipzig. He will be assisted by former Fenerbahce captain Gokhan Gonul.

The move follows Mourinho’s dismissal on August 29 after the club failed to qualify for the lucrative Champions League league phase, losing to Benfica in the qualification playoffs. Mourinho had been with the club for 14 months, arriving with high hopes of ending a title drought that has plagued the 19-time league champions since 2014.

Despite leading the Yellow Canaries to a second-place finish in the league last season behind rivals Galatasaray, Mourinho was unable to secure a championship, leading to his departure.

Mourinho’s Departure and Legacy
Mourinho’s tenure at Fenerbahce was marked by high expectations but ultimately fell short of the primary goal of winning the Turkish Super Lig. The two-time Champions League-winning coach, who has also managed major clubs like Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur, now leaves the club in a pivotal transition period.
