Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho has been slapped with a four-match suspension and fined over £35,000 by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) following controversial comments made after his side’s heated 0-0 draw against rivals Galatasaray on Monday. The punishment, announced on Thursday, stems from two separate incidents that have ignited a firestorm in Turkish football.

The former Chelsea and Manchester United boss sparked outrage when he remarked in his post-match press conference that the Galatasaray bench was “jumping like monkeys” in response to an early challenge. He also praised the appointment of Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic, claiming the match would have been a “disaster” under a Turkish official—a comment that further inflamed tensions given his ongoing criticism of local officiating.

Galatasaray swiftly accused Mourinho of racism, labeling his remarks derogatory toward the Turkish people and vowing to pursue criminal proceedings while lodging complaints with UEFA and FIFA. The TFF’s Professional Football Disciplinary Board acted decisively, handing Mourinho a two-match ban and a £2,548 fine for his statements toward the Turkish fourth official, whom he confronted in the referees’ room after the game. A further two-match ban and a £32,670 fine were imposed for his press conference outburst, deemed “contrary to sportsmanship” and potentially inciting “violence and disorder.”

Fenerbahce have staunchly defended their manager, insisting his comments were taken out of context and distorted maliciously. The club confirmed they will appeal the sanctions, but as it stands, Mourinho will miss Fenerbahce’s upcoming league clashes against Antalyaspor, Samsunspor, Bodrum, and Trabzonspor. He remains eligible to manage in the Europa League, including next month’s last-16 ties against Rangers.

The fallout extended beyond Mourinho, with Galatasaray boss Okan Buruk—who dubbed Mourinho “the crying one”—receiving a one-match ban for his own critical remarks. Both clubs also face supporter-related penalties: Galatasaray will close a section of their stands for their next home game due to offensive chanting, while Fenerbahce have been barred from bringing fans to their next two away matches after pitchside flare-ups.

The draw left Galatasaray six points clear of Fenerbahce at the Super Lig summit, intensifying a rivalry already at boiling point. As Mourinho prepares to watch from the stands, his latest disciplinary saga only adds to the Portuguese tactician’s storied—and often stormy—career.
