In a surprising turn of events, Tottenham Hotspur announced today the sacking of manager Ange Postecoglou, despite his recent success in guiding the club to their first trophy in 17 years – the Europa League title. The decision comes after weeks of speculation surrounding Postecoglou’s future, ultimately sealed by the team’s disappointing 17th-place finish in the Premier League.

In an official statement, Spurs acknowledged Postecoglou’s significant contributions: “Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties.” The statement continued, “We are extremely grateful to Ange for his commitment and contribution during his two years at the Club. Ange will always be remembered as only the third manager in our history to deliver a European trophy, alongside legendary figures Bill Nicholson and Keith Burkinshaw.”

However, the club’s board emphasized that sentiment could not overshadow their domestic performance. “The Board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the Club for a change to take place. Following a positive start in the 2023/24 Premier League (PL) season, we recorded 78 points from the last 66 PL games. This culminated in our worst-ever PL finish last season.”

Postecoglou’s tenure began with a flourish in the 2023/24 season, as Tottenham won their first 10 games and displayed an exciting, attacking style of play. However, their form dipped significantly, leading to a fifth-place finish in the Premier League. This decline carried into the 2024/25 campaign, which saw Spurs record their lowest-ever Premier League finish in 17th position. The club cited a “combination of horrendous injuries to key players and inconsistent performances” as contributing factors, alongside a strategic decision to prioritize their European campaign.

While the Europa League triumph, secured against Manchester United in the final, marked a historic moment for the club, the board’s statement made it clear that “whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the Club’s greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph.”

The search for a new manager to take Tottenham forward will now begin immediately, with the club aiming to rebound from their disappointing league form and build on their recent European success.
