Japan produced a stirring second-half comeback to overturn a two-goal deficit, claiming a stunning 3-2 friendly victory over Brazil in Tokyo. The win marks a historic achievement for the Samurai Blue, representing their first-ever head-to-head triumph against the five-time World Cup winners, the Seleção.

Brazil, playing under new boss Carlo Ancelotti, looked set to continue their strong head-to-head record against Japan after taking control in the first half. Despite an early missed opportunity for the hosts when Ayase Ueda narrowly failed to connect with a squared pass from Takumi Minamino, Brazil clinically punished Japan’s lapse.

The visitors struck twice in six minutes. First, neat interplay saw Paulo Henrique break free inside the area to shoot past Zion Suzuki in the 26th minute. Just after the half-hour mark, the lead was doubled when Lucas Paquetá chipped a ball into the area, finding Gabriel Martinelli for a first-time finish that gave Suzuki no chance. The away side was efficient, converting both of their shots on target into goals to take a 2-0 lead into the break.

With nothing left to lose, the Samurai Blue threw caution to the wind in the second half, and the strategy immediately paid dividends. Seven minutes after the restart, Takumi Minamino halved the deficit when he intercepted a loose pass inside the area and fired past Hugo Souza.

The wind was now firmly in Japan’s sails, and the equaliser arrived 10 minutes later. Junya Itō’s ball found Keito Nakamura unmarked, whose first-time finish, aided by a deflection off Brazil’s Fabrício Bruno, sent the supporters wild.

In a thrilling conclusion, Brazil substitute Matheus Cunha had a potential advantage restored, only for the linesman’s flag to rule it out. Japan then completed the stunning turnaround just five minutes later. From a corner, Ayase Ueda’s header had just enough power to beat Souza and creep over the goal line, securing the 3-2 victory and a monumental piece of history for the jubilant hosts.
