Zimbabwe captain Marshal Munetsi revealed that a burning desire to etch their names in history propelled the Warriors to a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Nigeria’s Super Eagles in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Tuesday, March 25. Despite Victor Osimhen’s late strike threatening to sink their hopes, substitute Tawanda Chirewa’s stoppage-time equalizer ensured Zimbabwe snatched a vital point in Uyo.

Munetsi, speaking after the match, underscored the team’s resolve to challenge Nigeria’s storied football legacy with one of their own. “While Nigeria has a rich footballing history, we are equally motivated to create our own legacy,” he said. “Qualifying for the World Cup would be monumental for our nation.” The midfielder highlighted the collective hunger driving the squad, adding, “Every player is driven by the desire to achieve something unprecedented for our country, which fuels our competitive spirit.”

The Warriors’ resilience shone through as they weathered Nigeria’s pressure, particularly after Osimhen’s 74th-minute goal gave the hosts the lead. Just when it seemed Nigeria would claim all three points, Chirewa struck in the 90th minute to silence the home crowd and secure a draw. The result leaves Nigeria languishing in fourth place in Group C with seven points from six matches, while Zimbabwe remain at the bottom with four points.

Zimbabwe head coach Michael Nees praised his side’s tenacity, insisting they deserved more from the encounter. “We fought back strongly, showing that we can play an attacking game,” Nees said in a post-match interview. “We didn’t simply defend; we actively participated. Nigeria started fiercely, but we held firm and demonstrated remarkable resilience throughout the match.”

Nees also pointed to Nigeria’s fading energy as a turning point. “We understood that as the match progressed, Nigeria might tire, and that proved to be the case,” he noted. Despite the Super Eagles’ early dominance and confidence, Zimbabwe’s composure paid off, culminating in Chirewa’s dramatic equalizer.

For Nigeria, the draw marks another stumble in their World Cup qualifying campaign, intensifying pressure on the team to find consistency with four rounds remaining. For Zimbabwe, however, the result is a testament to their growing resolve—a stepping stone toward the historic World Cup berth that Munetsi and his teammates dream of achieving.
